Although the camera is the ultimate focal point of a modeling photo shoot, great models do not look directly into the camera. To enhance the quality of your photo shoot, look away from the camera with a mix of head and eye poses. Looking off to the right or left side, or tiling your neck to either side can help you avoid direct eye contact with the camera. In many cases, your head and neck can remain stationary in your modeling pose—and your eyes can do all the work. Head and eye positions, coupled with personable facial expressions make for great model poses.

If an agency or person contacts you about paying you to model and sending you a check in advance, BEWARE! They will send you a check for more than what they say they will pay you and they will ask you to send the extra cash back to them. Please understand this is a SCAM! It will sound like a great opportunity. It is not! There are many scams that target people who are new to the modeling business.

Building a great online modeling portfolio, I'm sure you'll all know what one of those is but for those that don't it's basically a selection of pictures showing yourself in different outfits and poses. The standard size for the photos is 9 by 12 inches and you'll need around 10 - 12 photos. Make sure you focus on quality rather than quantity, remember, you're only as good as your worst photo. Make sure your online portfolio has a selection of both head shots and full body shots. Make sure you get a variety of different looks such as swimwear, catalogue and lingerie, you get the idea, also get a couple of black and white shots in there. Avoid using pictures of the same shot. It can be very advantageous to have photographs from different photographers in a portfolio. This will show the versatility in terms of styles and it will prove that a model can work with a variety of different people. Obviously, the cost of hiring different photographers for a portfolio is prohibitive, but there are many excellent photographers out there who will do prints for time - and of course many more bad ones. If you research what's on offer well, it can be an excellent alternative. Before going ahead with a photo session ask to look at the photographers portfolio to see if you like his style of photography. No doubt if you go to the photographers studio to book the appointment he will have examples of his work on display anyway. If you've never done modelling before this will also be an excellent practice run for you. Avoid photographers wanting to take nude shots, if possible take a friend with you to the shoot. Photographers who ask for nude shots may be interested in you personally.

Being in the right place at the right time can get you a gig that will make others wonder why you are always working and they are not. Networking is a must.

Do not get over excited about someone contacting you to do work. Relax and check them out. If they ask you for money ask for references. If you are good you will be noticed. Do not be in a rush to take any job.

Don't think of just getting a job, think about gaining a relationship in the business. People will always want to work with you again.

Make sure you come to a site ready to shine. If you look like you don't care, why would an agency want to work with you. Make your online profile look like you have been in this business for years. You never know who is watching you.

Quantity is not nearly as important as quality. Only show your best work. Anything less will have a negative effect. Now matter if you have 10 good photos the agent will still see that "so-so" image you stuck in there just to fill in numbers. Bring between three to five good snaps including one head shot and one full body shot to your meeting with the agent. If more are needed she'll ask for them.

This may be tempting to advance your career, but it will lead you to become a slave to the business. Don't try the quick easy way. Trust me you will get many offers to sleep with someone to get a part. Just say no and don't try to be a whistle blower. Warn personal friends to watch out for casting directors who try and sleep with models for parts. The casting couch is real.

Take a photo of yourself in a bikini every week to measure your progress (and keep you motivated!)

Wear clothes that flatter you. Seriously. Wear clothes that BEST compliment your shape. If you are unsure, set up an appointment with a stylist and get some tips on how to dress your body type. If you can't afford a stylist, get a fashionable friend to help you. Don't be fooled into thinking that because you may be tall and thin, you can wear anything. Get some outside assistance to look your best.

The thong has become popular for a number of reasons. One is that wearing them when sunbathing gives you a more even tan, and that unsightly panty lines are virtually absent. Then there is the “teasing” aspect, which, when worn under pretty tight jeans, for example, would leave men wondering if she’s wearing anything underneath or not.

Although sometimes concentration enhances a good photograph, obvious concentration can distract and often ruin a good photograph as well. Do not hold your breath for a modeling pose; always remember to breathe and appear at ease.

If you have a naturally beautiful smile—show your pearly whites with pride, just not every time. If you smile in each modeling pose, modeling agents will notice your lack of versatility, not your smile. To add variety to your modeling poses, try switching up your smile with a cute frown, a bratty bout, a friendly laugh, or even an edgy scowl. Your facial expressions can make or break your modeling poses. Let your smile show, but make sure to show what else you can do.

Bad posture is an unrecognized flaw in many people. However, for models, posture is a harmful flaw. Always remember to keep your back straight and your shoulders up. Slouching affects the mood of the photograph and enlarges the appearances of your stomach. In addition to your back and shoulders, always remember to flex your stomach muscles. Despite your weight or state of shape, your abdomen will appear more toned if you flex.

Attend as many of these as you can. You will begin to see the same faces and they will become familiar with you. They will also start to see how serious you are about your modeling career. They want to make sure it is not just a hobby for you.

If you want to grow in the business you must reach out to people in the business. Stop waiting and hoping someone finds you. Make some noise so they know you are in the room. Network.

Casting calls can be really tricky. Some are legit and others may have a little selfish motive to them. Just make sure you always take someone with you to a casting call. Never go alone.

This is how you educate yourself on the business. You have to get knowledge. Modeling is more than how pretty you are or how sexy you can look. Education is key.

They will cost you. They don't come free. They are worth every penny. Invest in yourself. You will get a return on your money.
